Accessibility and Utilization of Library Information Resources by Librarians in Universities in South-west, Nigeria

This study investigates accessibility and utilization of library information resources by librarians in universities in South-west, Nigeria. With the aid of survey research approach. Questionnaire was used to elicit information from 233 Academic Librarians, out of which 188 (80.7%) copies of the questionnaire were duly completed and returned. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count and percentage with the aid of SPSS Version 21. The findings revealed that the use of information resources by librarians was very highly utilised in the universities in South-west, Nigeria. Such as journals, Dictionaries, textbooks, newspaper/magazines, Internet/CD-Rom databases etc. And as well revealed that journals, dictionaries, newspaper/magazines and textbooks were very easily accessible by the librarians. It also revealed that poor Internet connectivity, unreliable electricity and limited number of computers are the major constraints of information resources utilisation in the university libraries. To further express the importance of accessibility and utilization of information resources by librarians in the university libraries, the study recommended that library management should provide up-to-date information resources to the library for the librarians effective use and organize seminar/workshop for the technical know-how aspect of the library to acquire needed skills, adequate funding from government to support the library activities and lastly, university authority should see to the major challenges faced by the librarians in the universities that constraints them from using information resources; such as, poor Internet connectivity, unreliable electricity and limited number of computers. This will help the librarians to adequately use the information resources in the library. Word count: 249
