HERITABILITY ESTIMATES FOR YIELD AND RELATED TRAITS IN BREAD WHEAT (Triticum eastivum L.) GERMPLASM UNDER RAINFED AND IRRIGATED CONDITIONS

ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to evaluate the 22 wheat genotype and two check cultivar (Gomal-08 and Hasham-08) for yield and related traits under irrigated and rainfed condition. Two separate experiments were taken out in the research area Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics Faculty of Agriculture Gomal University D I Khan by using randomized complete block design with 3 replication. The result revealed that all the considered traits were high significantly (p ≤ 0.01) different under both the environments except days to physiological maturity and spike length in rainfed condition. Phenotypic variance and phenotypic coefficient of variance was greater than genotypic variance and genotypic coefficient of variance under both the environment. Maximum GCV value was observed for grain yield plant-1 under rainfed and for spike length, spike weight and peduncle length under irrigated regimes. Days to 50% heading, grain filling duration, plant height, number of tillers plant-1, peduncle length , grain spike-1 and grain yield plant-1 exhibit high estimate of heritability ranged from (70.82 to 90.40) under rainfed condition. The remaining characters contained moderate and low estimate of heritability in broad sense. Similarly under irrigated condition high heritability was observed for days to 50% heading, spike density and spike index ranged from (51.61 to 76.09). Under the rainfed regime high expected genetic advance was obtained for 1000 grain weight, spike density, grain filling duration, plant height, spike length and number of spikelets spike-1 ranged (64.11 to 31.99). Similarly under irrigated environment high estimates of expected genetic advance was found in peduncle length and spike length ranged in (31.45 to 18.85). Hence it is concluded that these parameters could be considered as most suitable for further breeding and improvement program in bread wheat.
