Cruciferous vegetables constitute an important phytochemical that is Glucosinolate, it is an organic anionic compound containing sulphur, nitrogen and a group derived from glucose. Glucosinolates are abundantly present in the members of family Cruiciferae. The enzymes catalysing the hydrolysis of glucosinolates are known as myrosinases. The potentially beneficial activities of glucosinolates and their enzymatic hydrolysis derived products are antifungal, antibacterial, bioherbicidal, biopesticidal, antioxidant, antimutagenic antiestrogenic and anticarcinogenic. The biological role of glucosinolates and their degradation products is not completely understood. Though the available literature emphasizes the drawbacks of this class of compounds, but the potential benefits that might emerge from their biological activities have been ignored. The present review focuses on the beneficial bioactivities of glucosinolates.
