The return of military rule in the Niger Republic from 2023 to 2024 posed significant challenges to democratic governance in Africa, highlighting the fragility of political institutions. Factors contributing to the military takeover included weak democratic institutions, corruption, and growing insecurity. The coup exacerbated political instability, economic decline, and social unrest in Niger, disrupting the country's democratic transition and setting a concerning precedent for other nations facing similar political and security challenges. The military government promised stability and reform but struggled to deliver tangible improvements, leading to increased international isolation and domestic discontent. The review recommended a comprehensive strategy to restore democracy, including international diplomatic pressure, regional mediation efforts, and internal dialogue among key stakeholders. Fostering inclusive governance, strengthening civil society, and addressing root causes of instability, such as poverty, corruption, and security threats, were essential for a successful democratic transition.
