Antimicrobial resistance is progressively becoming a worldwide epidemic. This uprise might be the main factor that contributed to the adaptation and survival mode of microorganisms; such as the capability of microorganisms to form biofilms. Biofilm formation is persistently resistant to disinfectants as well as modern antibiotics. Therefore, microbial biofilms significantly affect sewage treatment, food and pharmaceutical industries with clinical implications to human health. The current review deliberates on the ability of microorganisms to form biofilms and potency of essential oils to destroy the microorganisms in the planktonic and biofilm state. Thus, outlines the contributions to better understanding of biofilm implications, cost effective alternative solution and finally influencing policy decision making. This review suggests use of essentials oils as a dual approach to combat biofilm formation and microbial cells. The chemistry and pharmacological evidence of the essential oils suggests that they are new, affordable, effective replacements to conventional antimicrobial agents.
