This action research addresses the challenges of third year History and Heritage Management students in senior essay writing. To achieve the objective of the study we use a total 21 graduate classesâ€™ studentsâ€™ response in the department by distributing a questionnaire to the graduate students of History and Heritage management
The study found that more than half of the respondent students faced the challenges of writing senior essay in methodical, organization of contents, data analysis and department level. Finding sufficient information, how to observe the event in the field to collect the relevant historical data and how to interview are somewhat challenging issue for the students more than 80 % response rate. Writing introduction of the senior essay, Paraphrasing/ summarizing other authorsâ€™ ideas and cite accordingly, writing well linked (coherent) paragraphs, referencing and writing bibliography and understanding and specify the senior essay research questions and objective/s are very challenging and somewhat challenging issue for the students during their writing time. The students also faced the challenges of joining, arranging and organizing the collected historical data, understand and identify the place of contingency/chance/ luck, necessity and logic in historical research writing make a historical criticism in the document in some and very challenging way. Beyond these challenges, inconsistence citation styles provision by the instructors and the department, lack of continuous follow up from the supervisors/ instructors, lack of organized essay writing guideline/ format from the department are also challenging for the students in a greater and lesser way.
