The study was conducted in four districts of West Showa Zone, Oromia Regional State of Ethiopia. The objective was to assess the stingless bees’ production system and marketing to identify the potential areas for intervention and improve the production of stingless bees honey and other products.12 peasant associations were purposively selected. Totally 120 households were selected based on the availability of stingless honey bee, and interviewed using pre-tested structured questionnaires. Based on respondents estimate, production from a single nest ranged from 1- 3 kg on average 1.5±0.43 liter liquid honey. This production is depends on potential flowering season. As the respondent suggest maximum harvesting season is Oct.-December (62.5%). Based on the study result the current price/ litter are 280.45±22.47 birr. The major challenges of stingless bee honey production is knowledge gap, pests and predators, pesticide and herbicide poisoning, Lack of stingless bee domestication trained, shortage of reference materials and lack of research stations to address the problems. On the other hand, opportunities for stingless beekeeping in the study areas were existence and abundance of this wild stingless bee, availability of potential flowering plants, ample sources of water and marketing situation of stingless bee product. It is hoped that further research will continue to enable us to uncover more of the mysteries of our unique bees, and to develop their potential.
