Abstract

The paper assessed the effects of International Accounting Standard 19 (IAS 19)-employee benefits plan on organizations performance. The study was conducted in Blantyre City in Malawi involving various companies having pension schemes targeting employees from various departments including the top management personnel. In the study, primary data were collected through the use of interviews and questionnaires while secondary data were obtained through the review of literature. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 40 participants for the study. The study used Microsoft excel to analyse data. The researcher distributed 40 questionnaires and only 30 questionnaires were responded to representing 75% response rate. In total 53% of the respondents agreed that benefit packages do contribute towards their work performance. The study showed that 76% of the respondents received communication about benefit packages from the management whilst 24% did not receive any communication. The study also showed that 60% of the respondents agreed that the communication was made very often, 23% indicated that was made not often and 17% indicated that the communication was not made at all. The study recommends that management should adopt and maintain a formal means of communication which includes the use of employee benefit handbook. It also recommends that the management should consider modifying and improving the quality of the benefit package.
