SOCIO-ECONOMICS FACTORS INFLUENCING THE USE OF IMPROVED TECHNOLOGY IN MAIZE PRODUCTION IN SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA.

Agricultural technology adoption has long been of interest to development economist because of its importance in increasing productivity and efficiency and since it plays an important role in agricultural development. The decision of whether or not to adopt new technology hinges upon a careful evaluation of a large number of technical, institutional and socio-economic factors. On this basis, the paper examines the socio-economic factors influencing the use of improved technology in maize production. Tobit regression analysis results show that farm size was negative signed but influenced adoption of IMV significantly. Coefficient of education, access to credit, frequency of extension visit, membership of farmers’ association, farming experience and off- farm income are positive and significantly related to the adoption of IMV. Great proportion of the maize farmers are facing challenges such as untimely provision of inputs (12.9%), high cost of production inputs (12.1%), inadequate capital (11.7%) and lack of storage or processing facilities (11.5%). From the findings of this study, it was recommended that government should strengthen the policies that make production inputs available and affordable to the practicing farmers, establishment of a well functioning farmers’ technical schools in rural areas to educate farmers on important of using improved technology to boost their production as well as income,
