The lingering stigma of childlessness in Kenya reflects the intricacy of cultural synthesis, just as much as human agency. Although medical advances and class privilege mitigate the status of childless women, culture, religious traditions, and literature compound the scorn for childlessness. The cult of motherhood helps explain the ambivalence among most childless women and illustrates the fault lines in claims of women’s shared status.
