Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant potency of Penthorum chinesePursh (PCP) in vitro by using several assays, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2,2’-azinobis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical (·OH) scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. Meanwhile, the DNA damage protection by PCP was evaluated. PCP extracts showed the potent DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl radicals scavenging activities and inhibited the lipid peroxidation. Moreover, PCP extracts exhibited DNA damage protective activity. The total phenols and flavonoids contents were determined and the phenolic compounds were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results suggested that the medicinal function of PCP may be linked to the antioxidant activity.
