The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of environmental factors on distribution of medicinal plants in Chaharbagh rangelands in North East Iran. Sampling of vegetation was performed in quadrats positioned in the study area using a randomized-systematic method. Vegetation data including medicinal plants and their density were estimated quantitatively within each quadrat. The topographic conditions including slope, aspect and elevation from sea level were recorded for each quadrat. Soil samples were also taken in 0 to 30 cm depths in each plant community. The measured soil variables included texture, proportion of lime, moisture, acidity (pH), electrical conductivity and organic carbon. Multivariate techniques including canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and stepwise regression were used to analyse the collected data. The results showed that the medicinal plants distribution pattern was mainly related to slope and elevation.
