A survey on VAM association in three different species of Cassia and determination of antimicrobial property of these phytoextracts

Demands of traditional herbal medicines are increasing day by day over the world. Considering the growing demand of medicinal plants in curative treatments to our society and the role of VAM fungi in augmentation of the production of active secondary metabolites by the medicinal plants, the present work has been undertaken to survey the mycorrhizal status in three different species of Cassia viz, C. alata, C....

Micropropagation of Plumbago zeylanica L. (Plumbaginaceae) in Ibadan, Southwestern, Nigeria

The root of Plumbago zeylanica is widely used by traditional Yoruba healers in Ibadan, Southwestern Nigeria, in the management and treatment of various infections and diseases. The plant is mainly harvested from the wild. The indiscriminate collection of the roots and non - cultivation of the plant has many implications for biodiversity. The plant is becoming scarce due to increasing demand for its use in...

Simultaneous determination of 6 active components in traditional Chinese medicine “KANGXIN” tablets by RP-HPLC–DAD

A HPLC method was developed for simultaneous quantitative determination of the 6 compounds namely aloin, puerarin, genistein, daidzin, genistin and daidzein in “KANGXIN” tablets. The separation was achieved on a C18 column, a diode array detector at 260 nm and a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile and water under the gradient elution. Good linear relationships were obtained. The average recoveries...

Microwave-assisted extraction of flavonoids from Chinese herb Radix Puerariae (Ge Gen)

Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) technique was developed for the extraction of flavonoids from Radix Puerariae (FRP). Several influential parameters of the MAE procedure (ethanol concentration, solvent volume, microwave power and extraction time) were studied through single factor experiments and orthogonal experiment for the optimization of the extraction protocol. The optimal conditions of MAE were:...

Chemotypic variations and phytotoxic studies of essential oils of endemic medicinal plant, Seriphidium kurramense, from Pakistan

Seriphidium kurramense is an endemic and economic medicinal plant growing in a small narrow valley of tribal region in Pakistan, Upper Kurram Agency, at Pakistan-Afghanistan border. GC-MS analysis of essential oils of S. kurramenseidentified 28 chemical constituents from 16 populations with two distinct chemotypes, A and B. Both chemotypes represented similar morphological features. Major chemical constituents...

Phytochemical screening, elemental analysis and acute toxicity of aqueous extract of Allium sativum L. bulbs in experimental rabbits

There seems to be little literature about the toxicity of the widely used garlic, which makes it important to investigate chemical elements as well as chemical compounds that could be present in garlic bulbs and their safety for human handlers and consumers. Phytochemical screening and elemental analysis of powdered bulb of Allium sativum L. and toxicological effects of its aqueous extract were...

Detection of congenital anomalies in Mus musculus induced by crude leaf extracts of Goniothalamus amuyon (Blanco) Merr. and Alstonia macrophylla Wall. Ex G.Don

A significant portion of congenital malformations in newborn infants is caused by teratogenic exposure. By gaining information on the teratogenicity of a substance, it can be avoided especially during the crucial stages of pregnancy and by knowing the antiteratogenic effects of a substance; it can be used to counteract the effects of known teratogens. The objective of this study is to evaluate the teratogenic activities...

Assignments of 1H and 13C NMR signals of Euphorbia factor L1 and investigation of its anticancer activity in vitro

In this article, we reported the isolation and characterization of Euphorbia factor L1 from Caper Euphorbia seed. The complete 1H and 13C NMR signals were assigned with the help of 1D, 2D NMR techniques. In addition, the anticancer activities of Euphorbia factor L1 were investigated. It exhibited potent cytotoxicity to KB, KBv200, MCF-7 and MCF-7/ADR cells with the...

Chemical composition of leaf oil of Nigerian grown Aspilia africana C. D. Adams

Pulverized leaves of Aspilia africana afforded oil in the yield of 0.08% v/w. GC, GC/MS analyses of the oil revealed the abundance of sesquiterpenes (57.5%), with α-cubebene (31.1%) as the major component. Copaene (7.0%) and β-caryophyllene (4.8%) existed in appreciable quantities. Predominant monoterpenes were: α-pinene (6.7%), α-thujene (5.1%) and car-3-ene (5.0%).   Key...
