ABSTRACT A cross-sectional study was conducted in three PAS of Oofa district Wolaita zone /southern Ethiopia, from November to April, to determine the prevalence of trypanosomosis in small ruminants. Blood samples were collected from 384 randomly selected local Sheep (139) and goats (245) of different sex and age groups. The collected blood samples were examined by conventional hematological and parasitological techniques. Of the total small ruminants examined during the study period, 5 animals (1.3%) were infected with trypanosomes, of which 3(0.8%), were goats and 2(2.2%) were sheep. Prevalence of T.Congolense in Goat (0.8%) and T. vivax in sheep (0.7%) was observed. There was no statistical significance difference (p>0.05) between species, sex, and age. The difference in mean PCV of parasitaemic (20.28% and 21.50%) and aparasitaemic (26.28% and 26.17%) in goats and sheep respectively was not significant (p>0.05). The study revealed that trypanosomosis in small ruminants serves as potential reservoir of infection in its epidemiology although the present study revealed low prevalence (1.3%), trypanosomosis in small ruminants of the study area and its impact on production potential, costs of treatment and control and potential transmission to other livestock should be considered.
