The study was designed to assess the Hypolipidaemic and Hypoglycaemic function of watermelon seed (Citrulluslenatus) extracts in Streptozocin induced Diabetic Albino rats. Total of forty rats were randomly allocated into six (6) groups of five (5) rats each namely Control, Diabetic induced, Diabetic induced treated with 0.5mg/kgGlibemclamide, Diabetic induced treated with 200mg, Diabetic induced treated with 400mg/kg and Diabetic induced treated with 600mg/kg of citrulluslenatus seed extracts for a period of 28 days. Diabetes was induced by single intraperitonial injection of Streptozocin (60mg/kg b.w) and sustained by feeding on high fat diet. After 28th treatment, the rats were sacrificed under chloroform anaesthesia and the blood was collected directly from heart (cardiac dislocation).Serum concentration of glucose, totalCholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL and LDL of all the animals in each group were determined using glucose oxidase, and enzymatic methods for Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL estimations while LDL was determined using Friedwals method. The results shows a significant reduction (p<0.05) of Fasting glucose, cholesterol, TG and LDL cholesterol of Diabetic rats treated with 200mg/kg,400mg/kg and 600mg/kg concentration of seed extracts when compared with control and Diabetic induced rats. The result of the study showed that watermelon seed extract caused reduction in cholesterol, TG and LDL cholesterol in albino rats induced with diabetes.
