A Review of Impacts of White Pollution on Aquatic Environment

TEMIDAYO EBENEZER OLAGUNJU, STEPHEN OLUFEMI BABALOLA, TAIWO ADEWALE ADEBOYE

Aquatic environment is undoubtedly important to human existence and it constitutes the largest portion of the earth surface. White pollution is a major global threat to the environment, causing impairment of its structure and function, ultimately with adverse effect on man. Many forms of human activities has continued to introduce plastic waste into the global waters since the inception of “plastic age”, causing disruption of chemical and physical components of global waters as well as the endangerment of aquatic lives and man himself. To address the problems, combined efforts of the general public, global/regional organizations, scientific communities, non-governmental organizations and governments at all levels are needed to educate the public, with combined approach of efficient legislation, economic instruments, conversion of plastic waste to energy source, use of alternatives and the clean-up of existing plastic waste.
