Impact of Mass Media on Nigeria’s National Development: Continuity and Challenges

This paper examined the impact of mass media on Nigeria’s national development. Media plays an important function in education and information dissemination to the society. The media initiates public participation through knowledge exchange and advocating issue, technologies and skills to the people. While Agenda setting and Framing theories as well as survey method were adopted by the study, findings showed that the Nigeria media in its process to effectively carry out major responsibilities, often faced various challenges ranging from repressive or anti-press laws, poor remuneration apparent prevailing interests of media must incessantly take into consideration the socio-cultural state under which it functions, even as it does not misplaced priority on the general obligations of the profession. This paper recommended that government should give a complete freedom to the media to carry out their duties by removing intolerable laws that encroach on the effective practice of journalism.
