Ameliorative effects of Embilica officinalis and Rosmarinus officinalis on cadmium-induced oxidative stress in Wistar rats

The study was designed to assess the antioxidative potential of three dietary antioxidants, vitamin C, Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) leaf extract (10% carnosic acid) and Amla (Embilica officinalis) fruit extract (aqueous) on cadmium-induced oxidative stress and the related histopathology of the liver and kidney of Wistar rats. Cadmium was administered as cadmium chloride (15 mg/kg body weight/day) for...

Effect of acid hydrolysis in the microwave-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from Geranium sibiricum Linne with the guidance of antibacterial activity

The feasibility and the effect of acid or alkali hydrolysis in microwave-assisted extraction as well as the antibacterial activity of the resulting extracts were studied to select appropriate phenols extraction method. The results demonstrated that acid hydrolysis was suitable for the extraction of phenols from Geranium sibiricum and hydrochloric acid (HCl) hydrolysis do not only performed the...

A systematic review of the antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity effects and safety of triphala herbal formulation

Triphala (TPL) is one of the oldest used polyherbal preparations. It is comprised ofTerminalia chebula, Terminalia bellerica and Emblica officinalis. A variety of uses, such as anti-obesity, of TPL have been described in Ayurvedic and Al-Qanoon Felteb literature. This study focuses on the efficacy and safety of triphala in medicines, with any outcome in humans and animals; and described some of the...

Confrontation between ethnopharmacology and scientific results of the herbal medicaments from Brazil to be applied in primary health care

Many studies on medicinal plants were conducted without botanical or pharmacological selection, in what produced little information to support the use of phytotherapic medicine in basic health units. The aim of this work was to generate data from important medicinal plants used by Brazilian population obtained from ethnopharmacological studies and indicate its correct use based on pharmacological test. It was...

Analysis on the genetic control of heterosis for guanosine and organic acid contents in tuber of Pinellia ternata by using of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) makers

To explore advantage traits of Pinellia ternata populations for hybridization breeding, effect of parents on contents of guanine nucleoside (hereinafter referred as "guanosine") and total free organic acids (hereinafter referred as "organic acid") of the F1 groups were analyzed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Results...

In ovo antiviral activity of Synadenium glaucescens (pax) crude extracts on Newcastle disease virus

Investigation on the effect of root bark and wood, stem bark and wood, leaves and sap ofSynadenium glaucescens extracts against Newcastle disease (ND) virus was done using an in ovo assay. Viable 9 days embryonated chicken eggs were arranged into 25 treatment groups (n = 5). Groups 1 to 21 were challenged with a 13C/SUA virulent strain of ND virustreated with extract at...

Antiviral activity of crude extracts of Synadenium glaucescens (Pax) against infectious bursal disease and fowlpox virus

The effect of crude extracts from different morphological parts of Synadenium glaucescensagainst infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and fowlpox (FP) virus using an in ovo assay were investigated. Viable 9 days embryonated chicken eggs were challenged with viral strains then treated with S. glaucescens extracts at concentration of 0.2 mg/ml. Un-inoculated group were saved as...

Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of anthraquinones from Ceratotheca triloba (Bernh) Hook F

9, 10-Anthracenedione and 1-hydroxy-4-methylanthraquinone showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli. Due to the synergistic effect of the individual compounds, the crude extract from leaves and roots of Ceratotheca triloba exhibited good potency (>500) against S. aureus and M. luteus, medium potency...

Bactericidal activity and phytochemical screening of Moroccan pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn.) peel aqueous extracts

Punica granatum L. is an important medicinal plant in Morocco. Several researches were focused on antimicrobial activity of different pomegranate extracts, only few were on traditional preparations. To optimize and enhance the traditional use of this plant, aqueous extracts (decoction, infusion, maceration) of pomegranate fruit peels were examined for its antibacterial activity against some strains of human...

Plumeria rubra (Apocynaceae): A good source of ursolic acid

Ursolic acid (UA) is regarded as one such compound that possesses many biological activities, such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and hepatoprotection, as well as the ability to induce apoptosis. Although it is present in the leaves and barks of many plants including apple peels, the traditional source to obtain large amount of this metabolite is Plumeria rubra. Its isolation is...
