Antiviral compounds from Jatropha curcas seed extract with anti-HIV-1 and Anti-SARS-CoV-2 action

Although there are studies dealing with the medicinal properties of Jatropha curcas, the scope of its antiviral potential is still quite limited, a fact that, associated with the current challenges posed by HIV-AIDS and COVID-19, reinforce the need to expand the supply. Knowledge about the antiviral resources available to it. In this context and in the search for natural products with anti-HIV-1 and anti-SARS-CoV-2 activities, the research analyzed, from the extract of the seed of Jatropha curcas, the structure of the plant whose antiviral references were not found in the literature, the presence of compounds that can contribute to potentiate it as a candidate for herbal medicine. Methodologically, it included the GC-MS analysis to screen for active substances, and the bibliographic consultation to find those with an anti-HIV-1 and anti-SARS-CoV-2 indication. The results showed the presence of 27 compounds, of which Glycerol 1-palmitate, Stigmasterol and Gamma-sitosterol have antiviral references in the literature. Regarding Glycerol 1-palmitate, no detailed description of the antiviral action was found. About Stigmasterol and Gamma-sitosterol, it was evident that they act as anti-HIV-1 and anti-SARS-CoV-2, respectively, inhibiting in the first case the reverse transcriptase of HIV-1, and in the second the proteases 3CLpro, PLpro and the Spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2. However, despite the fact that the extract of Jatropha curcas seeds is constituted of antiviral compounds against the etiological agents of HIV-AIDS and COVID-19, it is concluded that there is a need to deepen this evidence, evolving to in vitro assays, in vivo and security.
