Study on the Reduction of Properties of Wastewater Using Water Hyacinth

D.V.S. Bhagavanulu, D. Srinivasa Murthy, Ms. C. Anjali

Industrial sewage management is a serious issue in most of the cities in developing countries. Though many physio – chemical techniques have been set up, they seem to be expensive and laborious. Hence, it is necessary to find a simple low cost - effective treatment method for removing the pollutants in the water. In the present study, an investigation is conducted on dry water hyacinth and its biosorption property on waste water. Changes in industrial sewage characteristics like COD, BOD, DO, pH and turbidity on addition of powdered dry water hyacinth parts, viz., root, stem and leaves at different dosages and maintaining distinct contact time has been noticed. The study revealed that the root powder of Water Hyacinth with a dosage of 1.5g/l and at a contact time of 30 minutes is effective in reducing the wastewater parameters into permissible range that can be adopted for aimed purpose.
