Transcriptional regulatory network controlling secondary cell wall biosynthesis and biomass production in vascular plants

Secondary wall is an abundant component of plant biomass and has a potential to be a renewable resource of bioenergy and biomaterials. It is important to unravel the molecular mechanism underlying secondary wall formation and how it contributes to plant biomass production. In this review, we summarized the potential role of transcription factors (TFs) in secondary wall formation, and prospected to design the future...

Assessment of in silico BAC-based simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker development for tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Tomato landraces are less sensitive to environmental stresses and grown mainly under rain fed conditions. They are still grown in small farms due to quality and special demand of consumers. These landraces are valuable sources of genetic traits, and plant breeders can use breeding programs for crop improvement. One of the primary needs of the crop improvement is the estimation of genetic diversity. Development of...

Predicting the catalytic sites of isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS) related non-haem iron-dependent oxygenases and oxidases (NHIDOX) through a structural superimposition and molecular docking approach

Isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS) related Non-haem iron-dependent oxygenases and oxidases (NHIDOX) demonstrated a striking structural conservativeness, even with low protein sequence homology. It is evident that these enzymes have an architecturally similar catalytic centre with active ligands lining the reactive pocket. Deacetoxycephalosporin C synthase (DAOCS), isopenicillin N synthase (IPNS),...

Preparation and PEGylation of recombinant human interferon lambda3

The purpose of this study was to express recombinant human interferon lambda3 (rhIFN-λ3) in Escherichia coli, and prepare PEGylated recombinant human interferon lambda3 (PEG-rhIFN-λ3). The rhIFN-λ3 gene was inserted into pThioHisA vector after codon optimization and transformed into E. coli top10 strain, and then it was induced with isopropyl-β-D-thio-galactoside (IPTG). The...

Characterisation of human coronavirus-NL63 nucleocapsid protein

Coronavirus N is a multifunctional protein that plays an essential role in enhancing the efficiency of virus transcription and assembly. This manuscript reports the analysis of HCoV-NL63 N protein by comparing the amino acid sequences of coronavirus N-homologues. A ~50 kDa protein was expressed in both a mammalian cell and bacterial cell system that is similar in size to the predicted ~42.6 kDa HCoV-NL63 N...

The homozygosity verification for doubled haploid Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, by microsatellite DNA markers

A total of 845 doubled haploids Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus from three spawns were produced by utilizing hydrostatic pressure treatments on eggs fertilized with ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated sperm of red sea bream (Pagrus major). 481polymorphic microsatellite markers were used to identify the homozygosity of these doubled haploids, of which, only 31% (265 out of 845) individuals were fully...

Screening of new isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and cloning of the cry genes

Nine new indigenous isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) were characterized for their colony type, crystal inclusion and toxicity analysis with Helicoverpa armigera Hubnerand Spodoptera litura Linn. Genomic deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) isolated from all the new isolates were subjected to screening for cry1, cry2, cry4, cry10 and cry11 genes and predicted possible...

Impact of nitrogen nutrition and moisture deficits on growth, yield and radiation use efficiency of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Crop production in arid and semi arid areas is restricted by soil deficiencies in moisture and plant nutrients, especially nitrogen. In order to evaluate the impact of nitrogen nutrition and moisture deficits on growth, yield and radiation use efficiency of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a field experiment was conducted at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, during 2008 to 2009. The study...

Effect of spermidine on ornamental bromeliad cultured in vitro

Plants of the ornamental bromeliad, Aechmea blanchetiana (Baker) L.B. Smith obtained from seeds germinated in vitro, were treated with spermidine (Spd) at various concentrations (0, 10, 50 and 250 µM) or in the presence of 1.07 mM α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) + 22.20 mM 6-benzyladenine (BA) or 0 mM NAA + 0 mM 6-BA for shoot induction and 0, 1.07 and 5.37 mM of NAA for root induction. The...

Effect of (2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea (CPPU) on artemisinin production in hairy root culture of Artemisia annua L

Enhancement of artemisinin content in hairy root culture was investigated by using plant bioregulator in order to provide other alternative sources of artemisinin production besides the field grown plants. Synthetic cytokinin at different concentration: 1 mg L-1 (4 µM), 2.5 mg L-1 (10 μM) and 5 mg L-1 (20 μM) in the form of (2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea (CPPU) was applied to culture media...

Antioxidant activity and acute toxicity of Neoglaziovia variegata (Bromeliaceae)

Antioxidant activities of Neoglaziovia variegata were evaluated by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching and was compared with ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The total phenolics content of the extracts was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Total flavonoid was also determined....

Antifungal activity and molecular identification of endophytic fungi from the angiosperm Rhodomyrtus tomentosa

Problems associated with fungal resistance to antifungal agents are increasing worldwide. There is need to find sources of novel antifungal drugs and endophytic fungi could be another interesting source. In this study, 213 culturable endophytic fungi isolated from leaves and branches of Rhodomyrtus tomentosa from Thailand were screened for their ability to produce antifungal agents. Crude extracts from 177 out...

Post-slaughter carcass evaluation in whiteheaded mutton sheep according to the EUROP classification

Analyses were conducted on 120 lambs of the whiteheaded mutton sheep (60 tup lambs and 60 ewe lambs). Lambs were weaned at the age of 60 ± 3 days. Lambs were fattened using pelleted balanced feed. 1 kg of feed contained 860 g dry matter, 147 g crude protein and 6.9 MJ (net energy). On the day of slaughter (100 ± 3 days), tup lambs weighed an average of 33.1 kg and ewe lambs weighed 31.0 kg. After...
