There is a strong correlation between energy, environment and sustainable development. Ideally, a society seeking sustainable development must utilize only energy resources which have little or no environmental impact. Technological changes such as energy savings on the demand side, efficiency improvements in energy production and consumption, and replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy are the typical strategies for sustainable energy development. This research paper discusses the concept of sustainable energy, energy efficiency, and the role of carbon sinks in climate change using Ghana as a case study. International agreements and strategies for addressing climate change in Ghana are also discussed. Low carbon options have been adopted by Ghana to ensure a climate resilient economy. Some of the low carbon options adopted by Ghana such as, replacement of incandescent light bulbs with compact-fluorescent light bulbs and replacement of refrigerators using CFCs as cooling agents with environmentally friendly ones are further explained.
