Probiotic bacteria have been used in poultry industries as supplementary feed thereby improving poultry growth and performance. In this study, potential probiotic bacteria was isolated from yoghurt, and characterized. The applications as probiotics were checked using twenty four (24) dual purpose chickens and the effect of supplementation of isolated probiotic on growth performance, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency were evaluated. Chickens were assigned randomly in two equal groups treated and control groups (12 chickens per group), and reared in a controlled system for 6 weeks. Moreover, bioassays were undertaken to assess the resistance of the potential probiotic bacteria against antibiotics. The results show that a ‎Lactobacillus species (LB3) was a potential probiotic bacteria. The isolated bacteria has shown good survival abilities in a broad range of pH conditions (3.0-9.0), while, their optimal pH was 6.5. The isolate was moderately sensitive to erythromycin up to 15 µg and ampicillin (10 µg) but resistant to penicillin G (10 µg), and tetracycline (30 µg). Probiotic (1.0×106 CFU/ml) count was added to drinking water of the treated group (T2). The body weight and feed conversion of probiotic treated groups were superior (p<0.05) compared to the control group in the 3rd 4th, 5th and 6th weeks.
