Reproductive Performances, management practices and constraints of Zebu X Holstein-Friesian Crossbred (F1) Dairy Cows in Hadiya zone southern Ethiopia

This study was conducted to assess reproductive performances of crossbred (Holstein-Friesian dairy cows with Ethiopian Local zebu dairy cattle which is known as Zebu cattle),farmers management practices and factors affecting performances of Crosses of dairy cattle in Shashogo and Anlemo distincts of Hadiya Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Purposive sampling techniques were used to select district and kebeles. A total of 196 respondents were randomly selected and interviewed with semi-structured and structured questionnaire to obtain information on the management practices of farmers, reproductive performances of crossbred dairy cows. The data were analyzed using the general model of SAS version 9.2. Chi-square (x2) test was carried out to assess the statistical significance among categorical variables. LSD test was used to identify a significant difference between districts and seasons mean. Mean herd size of crossbred (HF) dairy cows for Shashogo and Anlemo per households was 4.74±0.114TLU and 3.63±0.115TLU (Total livestock unit), respectively. The overall mean of AFS (age at first service), AFC age at first calving), CI (calving interval), DO (days open), and NSPC (number of services per calving), were found to be 26.03±0.5 months, 39.8±0.06months, 14.12±0.22months, 84.9±0.11 months, and 1.66±0.08, respectively. Location had significant effect (p<0.05),on CI (calving interval) and NSPC (number of services per calving) and season had significant effect (P<0.05) on, CI (calving interval). Generally, by improving the feed for the animals and Sustainable extension support for the farmers will help to improve reproductive performances of the cross bred dairy cattle in the study area.
