Prenatal stress and social support on psychological well-being among parental woman attending antenatal clinic in Akure, Ondo State

The study described the level of psychological well-being among woman attending antenatal clinic in Akure, Ondo State. It also examined the relationship between prenatal stress and psychological well-being among parental woman attending antenatal clinic, and investigated the relationship between social support and psychological well-being among parental woman attending antenatal clinic in the State. Descriptive survey was used for the study. The population consisted of pregnant women attending antenatal clinic at Akure, Ondo State Specialists Hospital Akure and mother/child clinic hospital in Akure. The study used convenient sampling technique to select 296 participants for the study. Scales of Psychological Well-Being (SPWB), A to Z stress Scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) tools were used to collect data for the study. Results showed that only 18.9% woman attending antenatal clinic in Akure, Ondo State had a good psychological well-being, the majority (51.0%) had moderate psychological well-being, while the remaining (30.0%) had poor psychological well-being. The result also showed that there is significant relationship between prenatal stress and psychological well-being among woman attending antenatal Clinic in Akure, Ondo State. The further showed that there is significant relationship between social support and psychological well-being among woman attending antenatal Clinic in Akure, Ondo State. It was concluded from this study that prenatal associated concerns such as pregnancy-related concerns, socioeconomic concerns and family-related concerns are basic factors affecting the psychological well-being among woman attending antenatal Clinic in Akure, Ondo State. It also concluded that provision of social support structures (for example, family support, friends support and significant others support) will enable woman attending antenatal Clinic in Akure, Ondo State to cope better with their condition, which could lead to a sense of satisfaction, fulfilment and hope.
