REGENERATIVE TECHNIQUES FOR RAILWAY BATTERY EFFICIENCY TESTING USING SOLAR ENERGY

AMOOLYA D R

Batteries are the integral part of the railway transport system which has a bearing on the efficient working of the whole system. This includes signaling, telecommunication, lighting & fans etc. which ensures the passengers with better amenities. Hence, it is imperative to check the performance and reliability of the batteries at regular intervals. During overhauling of the coaches, batteries are taken out to conduct various tests. One of the major tests conducted is the discharge test during which batteries are charged and discharged for three cycles. While discharging, the power of batteries is being wasted, as it is dissipated through resistive loads. In the proposed work, this power is conserved & it is effectively utilized by charging another battery, some power can also be pumped back to grid using synchronization technique. It is proposed to utilize solar energy for charging the discharged batteries. Regeneration of energy is possible by adopting the above method.
