Tourism and Hospitality Investment Opportunities and Challenges in Gondar City, Ethiopia

Tourism and hospitality industry investment creates economic and social benefits of the society. The main purpose of this study was to explore investment opportunities and challenges of tourism and hospitality industry in Gondar city. Descriptive research design and mixed approach was employed for this study. Quantitative data was collected through questionnaires from a sample of 194 households and qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews from a total of purposively selected 17 interviewees. For all qualitative data, paraphrasing while remains faithful to the original meaning as it was given by the respondent was applied. Quantitative data was analyzed by the use of descriptive statistical analysis to show the existing investment opportunities and challenges. The major investment opportunities identified include: expansion of financial institutions, infrastructure development, good transportation system, capital goods incentives. The main investment challenges identified are non-accessible land incentives, Lack of ICT supply, infrastructural development problems, tedious bureaucratic service, and promotional and skilled manpower problems. Based on the finding, Government organizations should provide land incentives and special infrastructure support like road, water, electric power, ICT supply, and apply the concept of one-stop-shop service, training and advice to concerned stakeholders and investors.
