Determination of bioavailable nitrogen and phosphorus from pelletized broiler litter
Improved methods for broiler chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) litter utilization are needed to alleviate potential impacts of pollution around broiler production operations. Pelletization may constitute one improved method for handling broiler litter. The objective of this study was to determine the change in nutrient concentration from pelletizing broiler litter, and determine availability of nitrogen (N)...

Response to heat stress in warm season and cool season turf grass cultivars
In this study, we investigated differences between cool-season and warm season grasses when exposed to heat stress. The results show that Kentucky blue seed germination rate was the highest at 25oC (40-50%), decreased significantly at 30oC (23-30%) and dropped to 0 at 40oC. For the Bermuda cultivars, seed germination rate was two fold higher at 30oC then 25oC, and reached the highest at 40oC. The cool season perennial...

Screening of antibacterial and antioxidant activities of leaves of Eclipta prostrata (L)
The hexane, ethyl acetate, ethanol and water extract of aerial parts of the Eclipta prostrata were tested for its antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcusaureus. The antioxidant properties of those extracts were also investigated. Highest activity of both antibacterial and...

Effects of phenylalanine and glycine on some toxic effects of chloramphenicol
We investigated the effects of concurrent administration of the amino acids, phenylalanine and glycine, on chloramphenicol (CAP)-induced haematotoxicty and histopathological effects in rats infected with Klebsiella pneumonia. The study was carried out for 21 days in which haematological and histopathological changes were monitored in the infected animals treated with either of these amino acids or their combination and...

Urinary tract infection in Okada village: Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern
The antimicrobial sensitivity pattern of bacterial isolates from suspected urinary tract infection (UTI) patients at Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital was carried out from November 2004 to November 2005 using the disc diffusion method. The subjects were made up of 330 (60%) males and 220 (40%) females. The commonest isolates were Escherichia coli (51.2%), Staphylococcus aureus (27.3%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae...

Does neuro-anatomy award/ prize impact on student performance in the first professional examination in anatomy
Concern has been expressed about the motivational impact of neuro-anatomy award/prize in determining the overall student performance in the final professional anatomy examinations by comparing it with the result outcome of a high stake examination like neuro-anatomy incourse examination using the concept of convergent validity. A total of 57 third year medical students with the records of their grades/scores (Mean...

A device for thermal conductivity measurement in a developing economy
Thermal conductivities of copper, aluminium and brass materials have been determined using a system designed, constructed and tested. The system is a modified form of Smith’s thermal conductivity apparatus which has been widely applied in normal laboratory (1-3). It consists of a heating chamber (made by sandwiching heating coil within ceramic thermal insulators), sample holder region and the cold end area. The...

Effect of different concentrations of crude oil (Bonny light) on major food reserves in guinea corn during germination and growth
Effect of different concentrations of crude oil on germination, growth and major food reserves (carbohydrate, lipid, protein) were investigated in guinea corn (Sorghum bicolor). The concentrations of the crude oil used were 0, 5, 10 and 20% (v/v). The result showed that the radicle and shoot lengths decreased significantly (p<0.05) with increasing...

Removal of selected metal ions from aqueous solution by adsorption onto chemically modified maize cobs
Maize cob carbon was prepared by pyrolysis at 300 and 400oC for 35 min. This was followed by steeping in saturated ammonium chloride. The activated carbon which was characterized for bulk density, surface area, surface area charge, abrasion resistance and pH was used in the removal of Cd2+, N12+, Cd2+ and Zn2+. The surface areas of the maize cob carbon at 300 and 400oC were 0.010 and 0.021 g sample per mg iodine,...

Evaluation of the determination of reference ranges for reproductive hormones (prolactin, FSH, LH, and testosterone) using enzyme immuno assay method
The study involved a total of three hundred (300) subjects; 100 women aged 17 - 40 years, 50 women aged 17 - 40 years, 50 women aged 55 - 68 years, 50 men aged 17 - 45 years, and 50 men aged 55 - 70 years. The reference ranges for some reproductive hormones (Prolactin, FSH, LH and testosterone) were determined using the enzyme-immunoassay method. The values were compared with previously existing values, which were...
