The adoption of vermicompost technology has increased significantly in modern times as consumer awareness of issues such as food quality, environmental safety and soil protection has increased. However, there is little in-depth empirical research on the economic aspects of soil conservation. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of the vermicompost technology on the food security of small holder cropping farmers in Southwestern Ethiopia. The results of Propensity Score Matching (PSM) using logit model showed that farmer's experience, household age, ownership of cultivable land and ownership of livestock (TLU) have significant influence on the utilisation of vermicompost technology. It was found that the use of vermicompost technology in the study area has improved household food security as evidenced by improved average treatment effect (ATT) in terms of Kcal/AE/day. Initiatives to increase soil fertility to increase crop production must therefore consider vermicompost technology as a possible option.
