Abstract

This study makes a detailed analysis of the survival conditions of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), based on a sample of 403778 domestic and 28446 foreign owned new-registered SMEs founded during the period from 2000 to 2009 in Guangdong province of China. By adopting the accelerated failure time model, this study confirms that various disadvantage factors emerging in 2008, especially the global economic crisis, indeed have an impact on the SMEs’ survival prospect of Guangdong province in China.

Key words: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), survival condition, accelerated failure time model, global economic crisis, emerging economy.
