Socio-Economics Analysis and Poverty Status of Artisanal Fishing Household Production in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State

This study assessed the economic analysis of artisanal fishing household production in Ogun waterside. Three fishing communities were purposively selected which are: Agbalegiyo (26), Ilamo (22) and Iwopin (37) making a total of 85 fishing households. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and chi-square. Results revealed that majority of the fishers were male (85.9%). The mean age, household size, and monthly income were approximately 51 years, 6 persons and ?119,352, respectively. Mean fishing experience, duration of fishing and period of fishing were 32 years, 6 hours per day and morning (63.5%). Primary occupation and level of education results showed fishing (88.2%) and 44.7%. The mean cost return structure showed that Gross Margin, annual revenue as ?112,205, ?1,746,705 and ?2,823,105 respectively with gear and craft depreciation value of ?19790.59 and ?25867.84. Fishers’ poverty status results indicated 54% of the fishing household are poor. Chi-square results of socio-economic determinants of poverty status indicated significant (p?0.01) association between years spent in school (?= -0.499), household size (?=0.383) and number of dependents (?=0.97) while profitability showed significant (p?0.01) association between gender, mode of fishing and primary occupation are significant. The study concluded that fishing is a viable enterprise based on the economic variables analysed.
