Factors affecting the contribution of 1st year female students’ tutorial class to their academic achievement in first semester of 2016: The case of Afan Oromo and Literature Department

Female students have low academic achievement in all disciplines particularly in tertiary education. This study was carried out with the first year female students of Afan Oromo Department in Bule Hora University located at 467 km from Addis Ababa to the South. The study aims to find the factors that influence the contribution of first year female students’ in Afan Oromo Department to their academic achievement during the first semester of 2016. All first year female students and all instructors of Afan Oromo Department in the University who participated in giving tutorial class during the first semester of 2016 are the focus of this study. The first year Afan Oromo female students and instructors who taught them were given the questionnaire items without random sampling. Data were analyzed using SPSS software and the result showed that 100% of the female students and instructors were highly interested in tutorial class. 54.29% of the students responded that the teachers did not use their time properly. 68.57% of the students participated in tutorial class to obtain general knowledge and 28.57% of participated to obtain maximum score. And also from the time given (16 h), 57.14% of them used their time (10-16 h) and 25.71% of them used 2 to 4 h. 71.43% of the students noted that insufficient time was the major factor that hindered the female students as the teachers were too busy for tutorial class, while 5.71% of them said lack of classroom influenced their participation. The female students’ academic achievement in that semester was poor due to lack of time to participate in tutorial class.
